German prose

"The masterpiece of German prose is therefore, as is to be expected,
the masterpiece of its great preacher: the Bible has been the best
German book hitherto. Compared with Luther's Bible almost everything
else is merely 'literature' ‑ a thing that has not grown up in Germany
and therefore has not taken and does not take root in German hearts:
as the Bible has done."

and Fatherlands, R. Hollingdale, Walter Kaufmann trans., Kindle
edition, 2003.
