Time

"Days and months come and go and time waits for no one, therefore the sage makes light of a foot of jade and sets great value in an inch of shadow [the gnomon's shadow, which tells time]. Time is hard to come by, but easy to lose."

夫日回而月周,時不與人遊。故聖人不貴尺之璧,而重寸之陰,時難得而易失也。

From the Huinanzi (淮南子), a book we know to have been presented to Emperor Wu in 139 BCE.
