Ful

I was reminded of ful today. Here's something I jotted down on August 10, 2003, while Véronique, Laura, and I were living in Asmara:

Ful

Whoda thunk it: Mexican breakfast can be had in Asmara. Eritrean "ful" is a morning meal of refried beans, eggs, tomatoes, chili peppers, and bread rather than tortillas. The yogurt that accompanies this dish tastes like German quark or French fromage blanc. The coffee is good and strong, like Italian ristretto, and is served in a shot glass. Pastry shops are as popular as ful eateries. Breakfast for three, either three plates of ful or six different types of sweet pastry with coffee, tea, and sparkling mineral water comes to little more than one dollar.
